I may be biased toward the Holland Farmers Market–after all, it’s where I usually shop–but I’m trying to spread the word to encourage you to vote for your favorite.
It’s America’s Favorite Farmers Markets™ contest, which aims to re-connect local consumers to local farms, with the ultimate goal of keeping our nation’s farm and ranch land productive and healthy. The contest was created on behalf of American Farmland Trust, the nation’s leading conservation organization dedicated to saving America’s farm and ranch land, promoting environmentally sound farming practices, and supporting a sustainable future for farms.
Buying at farmers market keeps money in the local community and helps farms and ranches remain economically viable. By voting, you’re helping support farms and communities across the nation. As American Farmland Trust says, “No Farms No Food™!” So don’t forget to vote for your favorite farmers market now through August 31, 2010.
The process is simple. Just type in your market’s name and click “Vote.” You can vote for as many participating farmers markets as you choose, but you can only vote for each market once. At the end of the contest, one small, medium, large, and a new category–boutique, farmers market will win the title of “America’s Favorite Farmers Market” for 2010. The reward for the winning market in each category will be a shipment of No Farms No Food® tote bags, along with other prizes The categories are based on the number of vendors the farmers market has.
Then we’ll see who is America’s favorite farmers market!
P.S. – I think the Holland Farmers Market has a chance: In this year’s June/July issue of Saveur magazine, page 26, our market is highlighted on the “Agenda Global Markets” for October’s “The Carve”, where “chefs, culinary students, and creative types who like to play with their food compete to transform market produce into the likenesses of flowers, clowns, and animals.”
