From the Huffington Post come five suggested substitutes for dairy milk:
Rice milk (Bill’s favorite)
Nut milk (such as almond milk)
Many of these are available in mainstream grocery stores. If you don’t have a dairy allergy, I think it’s still beneficial to alternate dairy products with some of these options anyway–just for balance.
Almond milk, for example, provides you with magnesium, potassium, and vitamin E. Soy milk is rich in protein and phytochemicals, chemical compounds such as beta-carotene that occur naturally in plants.
For me, there’s no substitute for dairy milk in coffee. I’d rather drink it black than add soy milk or rice milk to it. But dairy alternatives work well in smoothies, cereal, and as substitutes for dishes that would otherwise call for milk, such as the Alfredo recipe I posted two days ago.
I have yet to try hemp milk. If you have favorite ways of using it in recipes, let me know!
